SAN FRANCISCO Digital camera shipments from Japanese vendors totaled 5.1 million units in November, up 72 percent from the like period a year ago and up 15 percent sequentially, according to a report from WR Hambrecht + Co. LLC.
So far this year, digital camera shipments from Japan are up 77 percent over last year to 38.9 million units, according to the San Francisco-based investment banking firm. Japan accounts for 80 to 90 percent of global digital camera shipments.
"We believe the rapidly falling prices on digital cameras are driving consumer uptake," according to the report. "For November, the [average selling price] for a 3-4 megapixel camera was $201 and is currently declining at a rate of about 35-to-45 percent year-over-year. As a comparison, ASP for 3-4MP camera last November was $322."
Shipments of less than 3MP cameras are up 216 percent over last year, accounting for 84 percent of November shipments. Three to 4 megapixel cameras are currently the sweet spot of the digital camera market representing 47 percent of total shipments, according to the report.
