MANHASSET, N.Y. Sharp Corp. and IBM Japan Ltd. have collaborated to develop a 1 megabyte Flash memory card equipped with IBM's Java Card Open Platform (JCOP), an embedded operating system based on Java technology.
Sharp's IC card incorporates IBM's JCOP31, the latest version of JCOP, which meets Java Card specifications 2.2 and GlobalPlatform specifications 2.1.1, the world standards for enabling multifunctional IC cards.
The card also supports the U.S. government's Advanced Encryption Standard and the Elliptic Curve Cryptosystem (ECC), an encryption scheme that enables users to obtain a high level of security using short key lengths.
Use of the IC card developed in this collaboration will make it possible, for example, to have a card equipped with multiple functions that include a credit card, employee card, and membership card. New applications can also be added as required after the cards are issued.
