MANHASSET, N.Y. Electronic design automation suppliers Mentor Graphics Corp. and Magma Design Automation Inc. saw year-over-year sales gains in their December fiscal quarters.
Mentor Graphics (Wilsonville, Ore.) earned $15.8 million, or 20 cents per share on sales of $214.9 million in its fourth 2004 fiscal quarter, compared to $13.0 million, or 18 cents per share on sales of $201.9 million a year ago.
The company said that book-to-bill reached its highest level since 1996 with backlog at highest levels since 2000. The Japan and Pacific Rim areas drove much of the growth, according to Mentor.
Magma Design Automation (Santa Clara, Calif.) posted a net loss of $0.7 million, or 2 cents per share, on sales of $37.3 million in its third 2005 fiscal quarter ended December, meeting guidance. The company earned $3.8 million, or 9 cents per share on sales of $31.1 million a year ago.
Magma eliminated ten positions
during the quarter as it realigned its workforce but did not lay off more people as was previously rumored.
The company expects sales for fourth fiscal 2005 quarter ending March to top off at $39 million to $42 million, with earnings from 0 to 4 cents per share.
