MANHASSET, N.Y. ON Semiconductor Corp. and China-based home appliance maker Haier Group have teamed to set up a joint power laboratory at Haier's research & development center at Qingdao in Shandong Province, northern China.
The lab will be Haier's first devoted specifically to power application solutions. Joint development efforts at the lab will focus on efficient power solutions for Haier's next-generation air-conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines and LCD television sets.
Haier will leverage ON's switching power supply semiconductors to optimize power efficiency and minimize standby power consumption, as well as provide a single, standard ac mains input voltage platform that can be sold globally.
For ON Semiconductor (Phoenix, Ariz.) the collaboration with the Haier Group gives the company additional traction in the China market and keep pace with rival suppliers that continue to expand their operations there.
"As China and the world embrace energy conservation policies, consumers will pay more attention not only to product-centric functions, but also to power management and energy-saving features," said Bill Bradford, ON Semiconductor senior vice president of sales & marketing, in a statement.
ON will assign resident field application engineers to work at the joint lab with Haier's R&D teams across different product lines.
