MANHASSET, N.Y. MIPS Technologies Inc. announced Tuesday (March 1) it has entered the China market with the establishment of a local subsidiary, MIPS Technologies (Shanghai) Co. Ltd.
The new wholly-owned subsidiary, to be located in Shanghai, includes a research and development center as well as sales and marketing operations.
"The electronics industry in China is going through a rapid phase of growth and development as Chinese systems, software and semiconductor companies respond to the explosive market opportunity in China," said John Bourgoin, president and chief executive of MIPS Technologies (Mountain View, Calif.), in a statement. "Our expansion in China is an important step for us, and we believe that this will bring valuable products and solutions, technology and know-how to our customers in China."
EDA vendor Magma Design Automation, with offices in China and throughout the Far East, will provide MIPS with a full range of software design tools and engineering support at MIPS' Shanghai location.
MIPS has appointed Ying-wai Ho as General Manager of the Shanghai Center. Ho, a MIPS employee since 1996, will oversee the general operations of the R&D center and direct the engineering team in producing MIPS hard core processors.
Ho indicated that MIPS Technologies Shanghai will also work with leading Chinese universities to develop MIPS-based microprocessor programs to provide advanced training to a new generation of Chinese engineers.
