MANHASSET, N.Y. Microsoft Corp. announced Friday (April 29) it has joined the WiMedia Alliance, an industry group promoting ultrawideband wireless communications technology.
Microsoft (Redmond, Wa.) is the first software organization to support the WiMedia Alliance, which has 14 promoter members including H-P, Intel, Kodak, Nokia, Philips, Samsung Electronics, Sharp Laboratories, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments, and Sony.
Last month, the WiMedia alliance merged with the MultiBand OFDM Alliance Special Interest Group to speed the adoption of ultrawideband technology for wireless applications. With Microsoft now joining the alliance, the specifications the group is developing have reached a level that makes application development possible.
The WiMedia Alliance is expected to release the first version of the MBOA physical layer specification during the second quarter, followed by a series of specifications and application profiles that rely on the physical layer.
