MANHASSET, N.Y. Component orders took a small dip in May, continuing a pattern of up and down ordering activity over the first half of 2005, according to the Electronic Components, Assemblies & Materials Association (ECA).
Overall, the ECA's index of orders of passive and electronic components, component arrays, assemblies, and materials and support services have shown overall modest growth in 2005, the industry association said.
"The index is a bit like the stock market-- you'll go crazy if you base your readings on trends over a small period of time," said Bob Willis, ECA president, in a statement. "We keep seeing fluctuations from month to month, but there's not really any volatility " the 12-month moving average remains relatively flat with a very slight upward curve."
ECA's findings suggest a more modest industry recovery than industry groups such as the Semiconductor Industry Association, which on June 8 projected record 2005 year chip sales in a reversal of earlier forecasts.
