COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Microsoft TV, the Microsoft Corp. division working on IPTV and television stream-management software, has hired away Juniper Network Inc.'s Christine Heckart to be its general manager of marketing.
Heckart spent three years heading up Juniper's marketing operation. She is the author of several books and research reports on broadband data services, and worked as a principal analyst and president at TeleChoice Inc., the telecom market researchers before joining Juniper.
Heckart will report to Moshe Lichtman, Microsoft TV's corporate vice president.
While the Foundation edition of Microsoft TV for digital video recording has been deployed by Comcast, and the IPTV version is backed by Alcatel, Thomson, Tandberg, Harmonic, Intel and Juniper, Microsoft has struggled to gain acceptance for its TV software environment among skeptical broadcast and Internet development community.
At last spring's National Association of Broadcasters conference, efforts to link Foundation and IPTV with an XML-based Connected Services Framework broadened the Microsoft TV effort with independent software developers. Heckart's familiarity with telecom equipment manufacturers should aid Microsoft's push into broadband infrastructure accounts.
