MANHASSET, N.Y. The SD Card Association has announced final approval of the microSD specification for small removable storage cards compatible with current SD devices.
The card is compatible with SanDisk's TransFlash, supported in handsets by Motorola, Samsung, LG, Kyocera, and Sagem. TransFlash cards will operate in the new microSD hosts, and microSD cards will work in TransFlash hosts.
The microSD card will address the need for increased data storage in mobile phones, for which conventional memory cards are considered too large. It is supported by Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Sharp, Panasonic, Toshiba, and NEC, among others.
"Adoption of the microSD card specification is a key part of the SDA's strategy to address the growing needs of the mobile phone devices market," said Paul Reinhardt, executive director of the SDA, in a statement.
