SAN FRANCISCO Actions Semiconductor Co. Ltd. has licensed the MIPS32 4KEc Pro and MIPS32 M4K Pro cores from MIPS Technologies Inc., MIPS said Wednesday (July 20).
Actions Semiconductor (Beijing) said it plans to use the cores to develop next-generation system-on-chips (SoCs) for portable digital multimedia applications.
MIPS (Mountain View, Calif.) said the MIPS32 4KEc Pro core is ideal for portable multimedia player designs because it offers a full-featured MMU and large caches required for video-based applications running on Linux and other operating systems. The MIPS32 M4K Pro core, the company said, offers an extensive range of optimized software audio codecs for playback of multiple audio formats and is the smallest cores offered by MIPS and is ideal for MP3 players.
"Consumer demand for sophisticated digital audio and video entertainment continues to exceed everyone's expectations," said Zhao Guangmin, vice president of Actions Semiconductor, in a statement. "Leveraging the flexibility of the user-defined-instructions, high performance and low power consumption of the MIPS cores allows us to deliver products with the full functionality and superior battery life that today's consumers look for."
MIPS opened an office in Shanghai, China, earlier this year.
