MANHASSET, N.Y. Wireless semiconductor supplier Atheros Communications Inc. reported net earnings of $2.2 million, or 4 cents per share on sales of $45.8 million in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, compared with a net loss of $0.2 million on sales of $43.4 million the previous quarter.
Atheros (Santa Clara, Calif.) said third-quarter gross margin was 43.5 percent, in line with the company's target, up from 41.6 percent the second quarter.
Total cash and investments increased to $164.6 million at the quarter's end, up from $164.1 million the end of the previous quarter.
"Our WLAN business was strong and profitable in the third quarter, especially in the enterprise and PC OEM channels," said Craig Barratt, president and CEO of Atheros, in a statement. "We also gained additional design wins for our ROC embedded solutions for the consumer electronics market."
In an unrelated announcement, Atheros earlier today named semiconductor industry veteran Dan Artusi
to its board of directors.
