MANHASSET, N.Y. Semiconductor supplier Atmel Corp. has been awarded $43.1 million in damages in a patent dispute with Ericsson related to its AVR microcontroller technology.
The International Centre for Dispute Resolution found Ericsson and its subsidiary Ericsson Mobile Platform liable for numerous breaches of contract and misappropriation of trade secrets, and will be required to make payment within 30 days in accordance with the award.
An arbitration panel for the Centre for Dispute Resolution also awarded Atmel (San Jose) an injunction against Ericsson, Sony Ericsson and any other AVR ASIC licensees of Ericsson, as well as Texas Instruments who manufactured and sold AVR chipsets to the Ericsson licensees.
The injunction prevents Ericsson from selling or using any ASIC embedding the AVR, and calls for Ericsson’s licensees to stop producing communications products based on the ASIC.
Atmel did not seek to prohibit Ericsson's use of Atmel's standard AVR parts.
