SEOUL, South Korea Targeting the Latin American mobile phone market, handset maker Pantech Group said Tuesday (Aug. 8) it has signed a deal with Claro, the third largest mobile communications service carrier in Chile.
Pantech, the No. 2 mobile phone maker in South Korea, said mobile phones to be supplied to Claro include the PG-1410 and PG-3210 GSM-enabled cellphones.
Claro, the Chilean affiliate of America Movil, the largest mobile service carrier in South America, recently changed its name from Smartcom to highlight its transition from CDMA to GSM.
Pantech also said it plans to ship three more new handset models to Chile this year, targeting a 5-percent share of the local handset market by 2007. With a mobile phone penetration rate at 76 percent, Chile is the fifth largest mobile phone market in Latin America.
The agreement with Claro is the latest in Pantech's business expansion scheme in Latin America, which started with Mexico in 2004, and was followed by deals in Brazil and Argentina.
