COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Lucent Technologies Inc.'s Bell Labs said it transmitted ten channels of 107-Gbit/s Ethernet traffic over 2,000 km of fiber using components commonly applied in long-haul 40-Gbit/s transmission.
In a paper delivered at the ECOC Conference in Cannes, France, researchers said the work builds on research reported at last March's Optical Fibers in Communications conference. There, Bell Labs demonstrated 400-km single-channel transmission over dispersion-compensated fiber.
The new effort used a prototype lithium niobate differential quadrature phase-shift keying modulator developed by the Japan National Institute of Information and Communications Technology and Sumitomo Osaka Cement Inc. Ethernet data packets were successfully multiplexed and demultiplexed using the modulator hardware, similar to modulators used at 40 Gbits/sec.
While the new technique uses multiple 107-Gbit channels, the overall goal was to show that a single, serial channel could carry a signal in excess of 100 Gbits/sfirst at 400 km, then at 2,000 kmand that multiple channels could be transmitted.
The 107-Gbit speed represents the overhead from a 100-Gbit Ethernet frame using error correction.
