COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Symmetricom, a network timing specialist which acquired Agilent Technologies' precision clock sources in 2005, is moving into IP performance metrics for IPTV with the acquisition of QoSmetrics S.A. for $16 million in cash.
QoSmetrics, founded in Paris in 1999, has U.S. offices in Camarillo, Calif. While its name indicates a focus on quality of service (QoS), the analytical tools used in measuring IPTV end-user satisfaction are often called quality of experience, or QoE tools.
QoSmetrics' service-assurance software suites are used by service providers and network operators to measure voice-over-IP and IP video streams.
Several test companies with expertise in IP and video have expanded into IPTV performance analysis through acquisitions in recent months. Tektronix Inc. acquired the Canadian company Minacom International Inc. in November to gain active probing tools for IPTV networks.
