SHANGHAI Foundry United Microelectronics Corp. said Friday it will open a customer support office in India's Hyderabad Technology Park.
UMC will target service at multinationals with design centers there, as well as the small but quickly emerging community of fabless companies. "Due to the cooperative nature of the foundry business, it is important for us to be close to our customers in order to provide immediate support during the important design-in phase," said Yeshwant Mehta, vice president of engineering at UMC's India Design Support Center.
"India also represents a strategic geographic location for a new office due to its potential for becoming the next major market for the consumption of IC products," he said. The India office should open within the next three months.
Foundry Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. opened its India office last month.
