BENGALURU, India Wipro Technologies has signed an agreement with Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd. of Japan to acquire Oki Techno Center Singapore(OTCS), a wholly-owned subsidiary focused on wireless design and intellectual property.
Wipro, based here, will also set up a dedicated development center for Oki to provide semiconductor design services, which in turn will aid the growth of Oki's semiconductor business. The all-cash transaction is expected to be concluded within a year, but the sale price was not disclosed.
OTCS has RF and baseband design capabilities, and the 40-member company has revenues of nearly 9 million Singapore dollars.
Wipro has been expanding its chip design services portfolio, acquiring analog and RF skills needed in India. It acquired NewLogic of Austria for $56 million in 2005 to build up its wireless design skills in CMOS RF and IP. The acquisition of OTCS gives it more RF, baseband design skills for DTV standards, WiMedia UWB, RFID and wireless LAN 802.11 technologies.
"The acquisition of OTCS is a significant step in our plans to strengthen the leadership in design services in the RF and baseband technology" sector, Ramesh Emani, president of Wipro's Telecom and Product Engineering Solutions Division, said in a statement.
