SAN FRANCISCOHigh-level synthesis EDA vendor Forte Design Systems has acquired Arithmatica Ltd., a U.K.-based supplier of IP and datapath synthesis tools, the company said Monday (Sept. 28). Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Forte (San Jose, Calif.) said the acquisition would expand its product offerings and accelerate product development.
"It's a very good play," said EDA analyst Gary Smith, principal of Gary Smith EDA. "They [Arithmatica] have a very powerful datapath synthesizer, plus these libraries that have attracted significant attention."
Forte said it would continue to develop and market Arithmatica's CellMath products, including direct support for CellMath Designer and support for CellMath Optimizer through its relationship with a graphics IP provider. The company said it would integrate Arithmatica's technology and IP into its Cynthesizer SystemC high-level synthesis tool to enhance quality of results.
As a result of the acquisition, Forte said it would expand its worldwide presence through the addition of Arithmatica's engineering group in England, a design services team and a U.S. sales team led by Dan Ganousis, Arithmatica CEO, who assumes the role of director of U.S. sales at Forte.
Smith said the acquisition is part of a strategy by Forte to fill out its product line to satisfy user demand. Forte's competitors in the ESL tool vendor space are also in the process of filling out product lines, Smith said.
"The whole area of ESL synthesizers is pretty exciting right now," Smith said.
Arithmatica appeared on the list of EE Times 60 Emerging Startups as recently as 2007.
