SAN FRANCISCOCanon Inc. and its independent marketing arm, Canon Marketing Japan Inc., announced they have reached a basic agreement to transfer Canon Marketing Japan's semiconductor equipment-related business to Canon, effective Jan. 1, 2010.
Currently, Canon Marketing Japan's semiconductor equipment business division handles the sales, service and support of mainly semiconductor and LCD lithography tools. Under the terms of this agreement, this division will be transferred to Canon to realize an integrated framework, spanning from development and design to production, sales, service and support, according to a statement issued by Canon.
Plans call for most of the employees of Canon Marketing Japan's semiconductor equipment business division to be transferred to Canon (Tokyo), according to the statement.
Canon has in recent years slipped further behind rivals ASML and Nikon in the photolithography market. The company is reportedly mulling plans to cease future, high-end scanner development due to technical problems, according to sources.
