Is it too much to ask to have someone technically competent explain this garbled business? Every news account I've seen so far is frustratingly obscure if not nonsensical. Statements like the above "Daigle designed the controller to multiply light without increasing noise..." are prima facie ridiculous. I don't doubt that something interesting is going on here, but in some ways similar to the initial "black silicon" claims, sufficiently detailed and clearly worded explanations are very scarce.
