SAN FRANCISCOThird quarter shipments of graphics processors jumped 21.2 percent compared to the second quarter, suggesting it will be a happy holiday season for PC makers and the industry in general, according to market research firm Jon Peddie Research (JPR).
Graphics processor shipments from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. increased 30 percent compared to the second quarter, while Intel Corp.'s shipments increased 21 percent, according to JPR. Intel shipped 63 million graphics processors during the quarter, more than twice as many as its nearest competitor, Nvidia Corp., the firm said.
Third quarter graphics processor shipments totaled 119.45 million, besting the record 111 million units that shipped in the third quarter of 2008, said Jon Peddie, principle of JPR (Tiburon, Calif.).
"So the market has caught up with, and exceeded, last year's highs," Peddie said in a statement. "The crash of fall 2008 is now behind us."
The increase in third quarter shipments compared to the second quarter was the largest in nine years, according to JPR.
