It's quite interesting they can detect the unique electronic signature of each appliance just by simply turn on/off 3 times. There is no mention about what kinda sensors being used though.

In my local town (Portland, Ore.) the local electric utility offered a personal energy management meter to customers for $50 and they sold out the first day! Ordinary people are desperate to find ways to get "green" and save a little money in the process. Look for an increase in energy management tools--both hardware and sotware--from multiple sources over the next few years. This is not a short-term fad.
