Job hunters top tool buyers at SPIE
The unofficial attendance at the annual SPIE Microlithography conference this week was around 3,800 people, up 10 percent over last year, according to officials from the organization.
But semiconductor equipment and materials vendors were complaining that there were more job hunters than customers at their respective booths at SPIE, which took place in Santa Clara, Calif.
That's not surprising, given the plethora of layoffs in the chip-equipment and IC industries. And it isn't expected to get any better--at least in the lithography industry.
Worldwide lithography-tool shipments were about 400 units in 2002, according to analysts and vendors. And in 2003, the market is expected to be flat in terms of tool shipments, they said.
