TAIPEI, Taiwan -- In a move to expand its communications-chip business, Taiwan's Via Technologies Inc. today announced an integrated controller for Fast Ethernet networks.
The VIA Rhine III VT6105 is said to be "3-in-1 chip solution" for use in networking and PC motherboard applications. Combining the physical-layer, media-access controller and management layers on a single chip, the VIA VT6105 is designed for both 10- and 100-megabits-per-second networks.
The device is designed for information appliances, set-top boxes, Web pads, and PCs. It is also designed for motherboards as well.
The chip comes in two versions. The VIA VT6105 is designed with a 32-bit PCI interface and supports auto configuration MDI/MDIX, and Wake-on-LAN power management.
Meanwhile, the VIA VT6105M contains added managementfeatures, including fiber optic network compatibility and enhanced VLAN support, as well as priority queues for multimedia traffic to increase Internet speeds.
The chip is now available but prices were not given.
