GREENSBORO, N.C.-- RF Micro Devices Inc. here has announced a family of silicon-germanium (SiGe) serial analog ICs for fiber optic data communication transceivers with speeds up to 3.5-gigabits per second.
"These components mark our entry into the optical communications arena," said Dave Norbury, president and CEO of RF Micro Devices. The Greensboro-based company produces analog ICs for wireless handsets, and it plans to use its experience in high-speed analog devices to address fiber optics transceivers.
RF Micro Devices said it is currently sampling ICs to transceiver manufacturers that target high volume "short-haul" end markets, such as local area networks (LANs), storage area networks (SANs), metropolitan area networks (MANs) and passive optical networks (PONs). These applications operate in gigabit and 10-Gbit Ethernet serial and parallel optical communications systems, as well as Sonet VSR and Fiber Channel networks.
In the new family of SiGe devices are: the RF3730 limiting amplifier for use in optical receivers; the RF3740 receiver with a high-gain trans-impedance amplifier; and the RF3750 and RF3760 integrated laser drivers.
The RF3730 amplifier requires 3.3 volts at 35-mA typical operation for 120-mW power dissipation. The input and output are internally matched to 50 ohms (100 ohm differential) providing I/O return loss of better than -10 dB. The RF3730 is housed in a 16-pin, 4-by-4mm leadless package, priced at $4.30 each in quantities of 10,000 units. Component samples and fully assembled evaluation boards will be ready for shipment this month.
The FF3740 is a complete receiver with a high-gain trans-impedance amplifier, limiting amplifier and a loss-of-signal alarm. It is intended for use as a complete analog receiver excluding the photodiode and requires 3.3 V at 65-mA typical operation for 215-mW power dissipation. RF Micro Devices said this highly integrated component will be useful in high data rate designs that use bare die implementations. Initially, the 3740 is being offered in a bare die configuration and priced at $7.53 in quantities of 10,000.
