BLOOMINGTON, Minn.--August Technology Corp. here today claimed a breakthrough in three-dimensional inspection technology by combining confocal microscopy with new a new optical design and software algorithms.
The patent-pending technology is called Rapid Confocal Sensor, and it's aimed at combining improvements in accuracy with high throughput in inspection applications, said the company.
"Manufacturing requirements for microelectronic devices continue to push the limits of existing 3-D inspection technologies, forcing the choice between accuracy and throughput," said Dan Nelson, product manager at August Technology. "With the Rapid Confocal Sensor this is no longer the case. In fact, the Rapid Confocal technology has the capability to advance and scale as inspection demands increase," he claimed.
The Bloomington-based company believes the 3-D inspection technology can be applied to applications in optoelectronics, microelectrical mechanical systems (MEMS) and other microstructure products, said Jeff O-Dell, president and chief executive officer of August.
