SAN JOSE -- Fujitsu Microelectronics Inc. today (March 26) rolled out a new IEEE 1394 multimedia IC that integrates the physical (PHY) and link layer functions on a single-port device for notebook PCs, video cards, and peripherals.
Fujitsu's MB86613L operates at speeds up to 400 megabits per second on either 5 or 3.3 volts. It includes a set of direct memory access (DMA) engines, known as Context Program controllers.
The controller block provides 13 independent controllers for isochronous (real-time) and asynchronous transmission. The 6-kilobyte FIFO is designed to ensure that typical PCI bus delays will not disrupt isochronous data transfers, said Fujitsu.
The MB86613L also includes analog phase-locked loop (PLL), transceiver and comparator circuits, and is compliant with the Open Host Controller specification, said the Fujitsu Microelectronics unit in San Jose. For use in host side designs, the IC incorporates a serial configuration ROM interface. The architecture also supports a 32-bit interface to the PCI bus in workstations, servers and PCs.
In quantities of 100,000 units, the new MB86613L is priced under $4.50 each. It is packaged in a 100-pin small quad flat pack.
