SANTA CLARA, Calif.--Applied Materials Inc. today announced plans to acquire Oramir Semiconductor Equipment Ltd., an Israeli-based supplier of advanced laser cleaning technologies for wafer fabs. The acquisition will expand Applied Material's portfolio of wafer-defect control systems, said company officials.
The purchase involves an undisclosed amount of cash, said Applied Materials, which must receive Israeli government approval of the transaction.
Santa Clara-based Applied said it plans to merge Oramir into its Process Diagnostics and Control Business Group, which is headquartered in Rehovot, Israel. This group was formed by Applied in 1997 after the company acquired Opal Inc. and Orbot Instruments Ltd. in Israel to enter the semiconductor metrology and inspection equipment segments.
The pending acquisition will enable Oramir to deliver its laser cleaning technologies to major chip manufacturers in time for the "emergence of high-volume 300-mm production fabs," said Yoram Uziel, chief executive officer of Oramir in Yoqneam, Israel.
