SALO, Finland -- Finland's Benefon Oyj here has announced the world's first dual-band handset that incorporates global positioning system (GPS) chip technology from SiRF Technology Inc.
Benefon's new handset, the Benefon Esc!, is a dual-band, 900/1800-MHz handset based on the global system for mobile communications (GSM) standard. The handset consists of a GPS navigator, a personal organizer and an advanced dual-band GSM phone in the same package.
The cell-phone uses SiRF's SiRFstar GPS chip architecture, which provides location awareness and personal navigation capabilities. With support for the open Mobile Phone Telematics Protocol (MPTP), the phone will enables a range of location-enhanced services, according to Benefon of Salo, Finland.
"Our partnership with Benefon represents another huge step in bringing GPS technology to the mainstream consumer and commercial markets," said Kanwar Chadha, founder and vice president of SiRF Technology of San Jose.
