GENEVA--STMicroelectronics today announced it has completed the acquisition of technologies and products for fingerprint biometric security systems from Veridicom Inc. The European chip maker also said it has hired Veridicom's software development team for Protector Suite of products in Prague, the Czech Republic.
STMicroelectronics intends to enhance its TouchChip product series by developing new products that combine fingerprint biometrics with PC smart card readers, said Alan Kramer, vice president and director of the TouchChip Business Unit. "Our enlarged capability now allows us to offer all the elements of a cost-effective security system, based on fingerprint authentication," he said.
The company said it has shipped more than 100,000 units in the first year of TouchChip production.
