NEWBURY PARK, Calif. -- Semtech Corp. here today announced a transient-voltage suppression (TVS) IC designed specifically to protect equipment connected to two high-speed telecommunications line pairs from strong lightning surges, electrostatic discharge (ESD) and other voltage-induced transients.
The new LC04-6 TVS Array, which protects two tip and ring line pairs, features a low maximum capacitance of 15 picofarads to preserve signal integrity across high-speed lines used in short-haul (intra-building) and long-haul (outer building) telecommunications applications.
The 6-volt TVS provides very high protection, Semtech said, meeting Bellcore, FCC, and ITU standards for T1/E1 line cards, cellular phone base stations, as well as routers and other equipment used in wide area network (WAN) environments.
"New CMOS devices, such as T1/E1 transceivers connected to high-speed telecommunications lines, are especially vulnerable to latch-up or destruction from lightning surges and other overvoltages," said Tom Dugan, Semtech's marketing director of protection products. "The LC04-6 delivers the low capacitance necessary for higher signal integrity and -- unlike other TVS offerings -- adds extremely high surge protection to meet the latest Bellcore, ITU and IEC ratings."
The LC04-6 protects against line-to-line or metallic transient events of up to 70 amps (for 10/1,000-microsecond pulses) to meet stringent Bellcore GR 1089 specifications, and up to 200 amps (8/20-microsecond durations) to meet IEC 1000-4-5 lightning protection requirements.
The Semtech device, which integrates four low-capacitance TVS diodes in a single SO-16 package, offers a low typical clamping voltage of 12.5 volts for 10-amp electrical pulses, 15 V for 70-amp (10/1,000 microsecond) pulses and 20 V for 100-amp (8/20-microsecond) pulses.
Dugan said that in addition to T1/E1 transceiver and cellular base station applications, the LC04-6 is also designed to protect WAN devices such as channel service units (CSUs), digital service units (DSUs), multiplexers, routers, Internet service provider (ISP) equipment and telecommunications customer premise equipment.
Semtech uses proprietary TVS technology to optimize the electrical characteristics for board-level protection against ESD, lightning surges and other destructive voltage transients. Semtech's TVS devices also feature silicon avalanche technology that provides extremely fast response times and insures the IC will not wear out despite repeated ESD or lightning surges.
Samples of the LC04-6 TVS Arrays are available now with volume production beginning this month. The device is priced at $1.85 in 10,000-unit quantities and is available in a Jedec-standard SO-16 narrow-body package.
