SAN JOSE, Calif. Fujitsu Microelectronics Inc. is offering to the North American market the FR Series of 32-bit RISC microcontrollers, which was previously available only in Japan and Europe.
The FR Series is designed for consumer and computer products such as ink-jet printers, DVD, digital TVs, digital cameras, multi-function peripherals, scanners, optical card and bar-code readers, and wireless telephone products. Fujitsu is also targeting automobile navigation, Controller Area Network (CAN) applications and dashboard equipment designs.
A representative member of the FR family, the MB91101, operates at 50 MHz and either 5 or 3.3 volts. It provides a core performance of 64 VAX Mips using a five-stage pipeline incorporating a Harvard bus architecture. RISC processor performance is supplemented with on-chip peripherals such as UART, timer, A/D and D/A converters, Direct Memory Access and ROM/RAM/flash.
Like other FR Series members, the MB91101 provides required embedded commands such as memory-I/O interface, peripheral resource control, bit management and others, with highobject efficiency. This means the chip can reduce the number of external memory accesses and cache usage, and offers a high processing capacity of 1.25 commands per clock. The FR series supports a CISC-like 15-bit instruction set to provide superior code efficiency.
The FR Series also includes the MB91106, MB91F109, MB91110/1 and MB91111, which provide various amounts of data RAM and ROM, and operate at 3.3 V for low power consumption. Additional power-management features include stop-mode and sleep-mode.
"The FR Series combines 32-bit RISC performance with the simplicity and proven success of 16-bit controller technology, making these MCUs appropriate for a wide range of computer and consumer-electronics products," said Basheer Ahmed, director of embedded processors marketing for Fujitsu Microelectronics. "Because the FR series has been designed specifically
for embedded control applications, the feature set is streamlined, and all members of the family are available at very affordable prices."
Fujitsu Microelectronics provides development environments to support the FR Series, including in-circuit emulators, real-time operating systems, software libraries for real-time embedding, and cross-development environments. Evaluation boards are available with SDRAM, DRAM and flash memory mounted for CPU performance test or hardware circuit configuration.
The FR Series is available in 100-pin quad flat packs or 100-pin LQFPs; the MB91110/1 come in the 144-pin LQFP only. Pricing ranges from $5 to $10 each in 100,000-unit volumes.
