SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Oak Technology Inc. here claimed it was delivering a new level of performance for recordable/rewritable compact disk (CD-R/RW) performance with a new 16x controller aimed at the PC and consumer audio markets.
Oak said its new OTI-9795 features the industry's fastest 16x write speed with 40x read capability. The controller's capability will enable drives to burn a full CD in 5 minutes compared to 10 minutes with existing 8x drives, said the Sunnyvale company.
"The continued growth of optical recording media, particularly in the CD-R/RW space, means that drive makers, who want to stay ahead of the curve, must have access to innovative, cost-effective controller technology," declared Bill Housley, vice president and general manager of Oak's Optical Storage Group.
The OTI-9795 features what Oak said is a highly automated block decoder/encoder, integrated CD-DSP (digital signal processing) block, digital CD servo, integrated wobble servo, CAV write capability, and support for synchronous DRAMs (SDRAMs).
Samples of the OTI-9795 16x CD-R/RW controller are available now, packaged in a 208-pin low-profile quad flat-pack (LQFP). Production quantities are expected in the third quarter of this year. Pricing is set at $15 each in quantities of 10,000.
