EINDHOVEN, the Netherlands -- Philips Semiconductors today rolled out a new single-chip Universal Serial Bus host and interface controller, which is designed to expand the use of USB in the embedded systems world.
The ISP1161/2 chip enables the host and interface functions to coexist and operate simultaneously. Consequently, the controller provides system designers with the technology for peer-to-peer connections between PCs and Internet appliances or between embedded systems or between Internet appliances and embedded systems.
"The ISP1161/2 goes one step beyond current USB technology," said Phil Pollok, senior vice president and general manager of Business Line Networking products in Sunnyvale, Calif. "Whilethis new chip maintains the original intention of the USB standard-- which is universal interconnectivity of peripherals with the PC--the ISP1161/2 enables embedded systems such as digital still cameras and PDAs to be USB hosts by themselves.
"This expanded degree of interconnectivity broadens the application of USB in all areas," Pollok adds.
The ISP1161/2, which conforms to the USB specification rev. 1.1 for its host and device function, can be configured as a standalone host, an interface device function, or both host and device can operate simultaneously. The chip features a generic 32-bit/16-bit parallel I/O (PIO) and direct memory access (DMA) interface circuitry.
The built-in host controller is a modified version of OpenHCI customized for interfacing directly to the system processor.
The chip adopts the core of Philips Semiconductors original peripheral controller, ISP1181, of which its 16 endpoints are configurable to allow for interrupt, bulk, control and isochronous USB transfers.
Supporting the new devices, Philips Semiconductors' Networking Software group offers the host stack for the ISP1161/2 for various kinds of real-time operating systems.
Samples of the ISP1161 in LQFP-64 package will be available in August and are priced at $4.90 each in quantities of 10,000. Evaluation kits will also be available. ISP1162 in LQFP-80 package will be sampling by the middle of the fourth quarter, priced at $5.30 in quantities of 10,000.
