WASHINGTON -- The healthiest American workers are the ones making microprocessors and telephones. According to the latest Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses, the semiconductor and communications manufacturing industries are the safest in the United States.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics study listed the telephone and telegraph apparatus manufacturing group as the safest industry, with 1.5 cases of work injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time workers. The semiconductor industry was second safest, with 2.2 injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time workers. That's the lowest level the semiconductor industry has ever achieved, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).
