SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- National Semiconductor Corp. today announced a six-channel clock driver with 50-picosecond skew to distribute clock signals within data and telecommunications systems.
First in a planned series of clock-driver devices, the DS92CK16 translates one bus low-voltage differential signaling (BLVDS) nput signal into six TTL-compatible output signals for adjacent chips on the same board. The 100-MHz DS92CK16 also is capable of driving the BLVDS backplane with the clock signal.
"Distributing accurate synchronous clocks is a key issue in large data and telecommunication systems," said Mark Sauerwald, technical marketing manager for National. "BLVDS is the ideal technology for clock distribution with its combination of high speed, low power, low EMI and high noise immunity. The DS92CK16 takes full advantage of the benefits inherent in LVDS technology to simplify clock distribution design challenges."
BLVDS is a variation of National's LVDS , optimized for high-speed bus or backplane data transfers in large, high-performance system applications.
Clock distribution networks are often not ideal environments, with many stubs attached to the transmission line on the backplane. To help performance in this non-ideal environment, National design engineers implemented a Gradual Turn On (GTO) BLVDS driver which is less sensitive than a very fast signal to a non-ideal environment.
Despite these features, power is typically 30 milliwatts and the channel-to-channel skew is only 50 ps, ECL performance at a fraction of the power. "Very low power dissipation, and very low EMI further reduce system costs through minimizing power supplies, cooling and shielding requirements. These costs often far outstrip the costs of integrated circuits in large systems," Sauerwald said.
The DS92CK16 is produced on a 0.35-micron CMOS process that enhances the low power and high performance attributes of National's LVDS technology.
Available now, the DS92CK16 is priced at $5 each in 1,000-unit quantities. The device is housed in a space-saving 24-lead TSSOP package.
