IRVINE, Calif. -- Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. here has introduced new 128-megabit NAND flash components that compatible with the company's current single-level cell 256- and 512-Mbit devices and fabricated with 0.25-micron process technology.
The single-level cell, monolithic device strengthens Toshiba's family of flash memory devices by enabling seamless migration to higher-density devices. In order to provide forward compatibility with the 256- and 512-Mbit devices, Toshiba's new TC58128FT uses thin small outline (TSOP) Type I packaging.
In addition, Toshiba is offering the TC58128DC, which features SmartMedia packaging and provides 16 megabytes of removable storage. Identical page and block specifications are used, making the new SmartMedia devices fully compatible with existing products. Both devices operate at a 3.3 volt single power supply, which meets the low-power requirements of portable equipment.
"NAND flash memory is the de facto standard for solid-state storage applications because of its high-speed programming capability, high-speed erasing and small block size," said Jackie Traeumer, business development manager for TAEC's NAND flash memory products.
"In order to increase the availability of our 128-Mbit NAND devices, Toshiba will manufacture this product at the state-of-the-art Yokkaichi Works facility in Japan using our 0.25-micron process." The previous generation of Toshiba's 128-Mbit NAND was manufactured using two 64-Mbit components with a 0.40-micron process.
The 0.25-micron process technology includes shallow trench isolation, adapted from Toshiba's Scalable by Design approach. This enables the company to achieve greater storage capacity within a smaller area, without sacrificing chip performance.
Toshiba is targeting applications in flash memory cards, solid state disk drives, digital cameras, set-top boxes, portable audio players, industrial equipment and emerging applications that require fast and reliable storage.
The TC58128FT and TC58128DC are both organized as 528 x 32K x 8 with a block size of 16K + 512 bytes. Access time is 25 microseconds (first access).
Samples of Toshiba's TC58128FT 128-Mbit device and the TC58128DC 16-megabyte SmartMedia device, are available now, priced at $28 and $31, respectively. Production quantities will be available in the first quarter of 2000 and production pricing will be available at that time.
