MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. is reportedly raising its silicon wafer prices amid strong demand for its products in the marketplace, according to analysts.
"MEMC reported better than expected earnings last night and are also seeing greater than 90 percent utilization rates on its wafer substrates, which have prompted the company to raise prices in 2004," said Bill Ong, an analyst with American Technology Research Inc. in San Francisco, in a report.
Calls to MEMC officials were not returned concerning the report. On Wednesday, MEMC posted strong results and acquired the remaining shares in its joint wafer venture in Taiwan (see January 27 story).
Capacity has suddenly become tight in the silicon wafer industry, with shortages expected for select and surprising products, according to the top executive of MEMC earlier this month (see January 13 story).
