RENO, Nevada The market is ripe for application specific analog devices, according to a report from research house Databeans Inc.
Communications, consumer, and computer analog and mixed-signal products constitute 71 percent of global analog ASSP chip revenue or $11.2 billion in 2003, according to Databeans. Strong growth in communications will boost revenue up to $14.2 billion this year for a 27 percent increase over last year, according to the Reno-based research firm.
Texas Instruments Inc. and STMicroelectronics Inc. have been successful in the wireless and computer segments for analog. Within the ASSP market, the consumer segment continues to be dominated by Philips Semiconductors and Infineon Technologies AG.
"Consumer and computer products can typically require analog content worth $20, including both application specific solutions and high performance linear products," according to the report. "Wireless handsets contain $10 to $15 worth of analog and mixed-signal products, including charge controllers, power supply ICs, mixed-signal audio, and transceivers."
However, the fastest growing market for high volume analog ASSP continues to be the wireless market. This makes up an estimated 85 percent share of the total analog communications market, according to the report.
Databeans predicts that this market will grow at a rate of close to 20 percent each year for the next five years. The market includes products used in wireless handsets, infrastructure, LANs, and radio applications. Combined, these products constitute 44 percent of the total high volume analog ASSP market.
In the consumer market, applications driving high volume analog and mixed-signal components include digital television, and personal imaging devices, like digital cameras and camcorders.
The computer segment is also a considerable market for analog and mixed-signal, where products are used to control motors in disk drives and printers, and to control the ink discharge on printer cartridges. This is a very high volume market with over 800 million units shipped annually.
