Xilinx Inc. is expected to select Japan's Toshiba Corp. as a second-source foundry partner for its next-generation Virtex 4 FPGAs, according to the CBS MarketWatch Web site.
At present, Xilinx' main foundry is Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC). Xilinx had used IBM Corp. as a foundry, but the two companies parted ways after IBM reportedly could not meet Xilinx' requirements.
Swaminathan Srinivasan, an analyst with research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan's semiconductor group, said Xilinx is forging a second-source foundry relationship with Toshiba, according to the report. The companies did not comment in the report.
