Microsemi Corporation, a leading manufacturer of discrete semiconductors and power-management integrated circuits, announced the expansion of its line of enhanced SOT-227 Schottky diode power modules to include two series having the lowest forward voltage drop, lowest thermal impedance, and highest surge current ratings on the market today.
Designated the SPB100 and SPB160 Series, the new dual-Schottky-barrier rectifiers employ a proprietary combination of materials and construction features to achieve performance advantages in what Microsemi calls its ISOBLOCK package. These high-current rectifiers will typically be used as output rectifiers in power supplies, switch gear, and similar higher power applications.
The choice of aluminum nitride instead of beryllium or aluminum oxide for isolation provides superior thermal resistance. A lower forward voltage drop and higher surge current ratings result from soldered bus bar construction instead of conventional wire-bonded chip connections. In the SPB100 Series, for example, ISOBLOCK packaging allows a 200 A SPB10045 to match the surge and thermal impedance ratings of conventional 240 A devices. Both series are available in 15 V, 45 V, 60 V, and 100 V versions.
"These are premium devices that give designers the choice of cost savings by use of a lower current rated ISOBLOCK module, or superior performance from our identically-rated device having a slightly higher cost," said Sven Nelson, Vice President and General Manager of Microsemi's Broomfield, Colorado operation. "We also provide many customers with application-specific solutions, even in volumes lower than generally available elsewhere," he said.
In medium volumes of 1K to 5K pieces, an SPB10045 is priced at less than $12.50, or an SPB160100 at less than $15. Both series are available for immediate sampling and delivery from stock.
Microsemi's first ISOBLOCK device, a 100 A, 15 V dual Schottky diode, was introduced in November, 2002, with additional device types, including ultrafast rectifiers and thyristors, indicated for the future.
