Conexant Launches First in a Family of 802.11 Wi-Fi Chip Sets
Company Now Offers World's Most Comprehensive Combined Broadband/WLAN Semiconductor Solution Portfolio
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--May 12, 2003--Conexant Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CNXT), a worldwide leader in semiconductor system solutions for communications applications, announced the availability of an IEEE 802.11b-compliant wireless local area network (WLAN) baseband processor with an integrated medium-access controller (MAC). The CX85410 is the first device in a family of 802.11-based semiconductor solutions. Available now, the CX85410 is offered as a standalone device, or in conjunction with Conexant's home network processor, asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL), and cable modem semiconductor system solutions.

The CX85410 features a flexible radio interface with automatic gain control (AGC) that supports multiple 2.4 GHz radios. Antenna diversity, which allows for multiple antennas in a system, is supported by continually monitoring and selecting the antenna with the strongest signal. Data rates up to 11 Mbits/s are supported, and the device is compatible with existing IEEE 802.11b modulation schemes. The new chip includes a variety of features that help lower overall system manufacturing costs. For example, on-chip static random access memory (SRAM) eliminates the need for external memory, which reduces bill-of-materials cost and board layout space. In addition, the CX85410 has been designed to provide WLAN system manufacturers with a cost-effective and highly secure silicon solution. The device includes on-chip support for industry security standards, including the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) 64- and 128-bit standard, Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), and the full IEEE 802.11i standard, which is expected to be ratified next year.
For manufacturers of network interface cards, a variety of host interfaces are supported, including PCI 2.2 and 2.3, MiniPCI and 32-bit CardBus. Reference designs for MiniPCI and CardBus are also available, enabling original device and equipment manufacturers to minimize application design time and costs, and accelerate product time-to-market.

The CX85410 is packaged in a compact 12 mm × 12 mm 160-pin fine-pitch ball-grid array (FPBGA). The device is in production now, and is priced at $8.00 in quantities of 10,000.

With these new devices, Broadcom extends its leadership as an innovator of wireless LAN technology, and expands the broadest solutions portfolio in the industry.
Broadcom was the first vendor to ship solutions based on IEEE 802.11g, which is expected to become the new mainstream 54 Mbits/s wireless LAN standard, and 54g is Broadcom's maximum performance implementation of the 802.11g standard that provides optimum speed, range and security capabilities. According to a leading market information company, The NPD Group, Inc., Broadcom has shipped 93% of all 802.11g connections sold through U.S. retail distribution channels. Additionally, all 802.11g-enabled notebooks that have been sold to date by major PC vendors are based on Broadcom® 54g technology.

Industry's First 802.11g and 802.11a/g USB 2.0 Adapters for Desktop Systems
Broadcom is the first to offer both 802.11g and 802.11a/g USB 2.0 adapters for desktop systems. By pairing 54g MaxPerformance with the high-bandwidth USB 2.0 interface, equipment vendors can provide a simple upgrade path to 54 Mbits/s for home and enterprise computing systems. The USB interface gives users the ability to easily add standards-compliant 802.11g and 802.11a/g to desktop systems without removing the PC chassis cover. USB 2.0 technology delivers 480 Mbits/s of bandwidth, which is necessary to support 54 Mbits/s wireless connections, while legacy USB 1.1 systems are capable of only 12 Mbits/s.

The complete design package includes the BCM4333 802.11 bridge processor and OneDriver USB 2.0 software development kit (SDK) in conjunction with Broadcom's 802.11g or 802.11a/g chip set. Customers benefit from Broadcom's reference design offering because it provides complete customization of features such as ease of use, security, and branding that are not possible with turnkey solutions. As a result, partners can leverage their existing expertise with Broadcom WLAN devices and software products to create differentiation in their end products.
AirForce BCM4704P High-Performance Wireless Networking Processor
Broadcom's new BCM4704P wireless network processor is the next generation of the company's BCM4702, which is currently the most popular wireless network processor in the industry. The BCM4704P adds a network processing core that is capable of wirespeed Ethernet routing/bridging, as well as virtual private network (VPN) termination on an integrated IPSec security acceleration engine. These features make this processor an obvious choice for enterprise customers who need both high-bandwidth performance and advanced security features such as encryption and user authentication. The BCM4704P and the BCM4702 both use the same AirForce OneDriver software, simplifying customer migration.
The BCM4704P integrates an advanced, custom 300 MHz MIPS32 processor core, two 10/100 Ethernet MACs, and a high-performance SDRAM controller capable of operating at 133 MHz with either Double Data Rate (DDR) or Single Data Rate (SDR) SDRAM. For advanced security, the BCM4704P integrates an on-chip IPSec acceleration engine that can deliver up to 75 Mbits/s of single-pass AES/3DES encryption throughput, and supports a broad range of industry-standard security features, such as symmetric-key encryption and authentication algorithms including the latest 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), Digital Encryption Standard (DES), 3DES, SHA-1, MD5, HMAC-SHA1 and HMAC-MD5. Additionally, the BCM4704 is available for customers seeking increased network processing performance in applications without on-chip IPSec acceleration, and it is pin-compatible with the BCM4704P.
Xpress Technology Enhances Performance
All of Broadcom's wireless solutions can be enhanced with its newly announced standards-based Xpress technology, which increases throughput by improving the efficiency of wireless transmissions. Performance gains afforded by Xpress technology are not limited to 802.11g or Broadcom products. Any 802.11 client adapter can receive Xpress technology packets and achieve better throughput. This is especially beneficial in many corporate networks that include equipment from multiple vendors. In homes, the additional bandwidth provided by Xpress will improve performance as consumers add wireless LAN-enabled devices to their home networks, including desktop PCs, printers, handheld devices, and media servers.
