National Semiconductor Integrates Multiple 10-bit SerDes, Reducing Power, Board Space and Costs for Communications Systems
National Semiconductor Corporation introduces the industry's most integrated Bus low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) serializer/deserializer (SerDes) devices, dramatically reducing power, board space and costs for communication systems. Leveraging National Semiconductor's leadership and innovations in LVDS technology, the new SerDes devices integrate multiple 10-bit SerDes devices into one package and include features such as innovative At-Speed BIST testability. They are designed for 3G base stations, wireless local loop (WLL) systems, fixed access equipment, imaging/display interfaces and high-speed industrial links.
"National Semiconductor's SCAN928028 and SCAN926260 reduce power by more than 30 percent, board space by more than 50 percent and device cost by more than 30 percent over discrete solutions," said Dave Lewis, marketing manager for the PC and Networking Group, National Semiconductor. "More importantly, they provide these system-level benefits without sacrificing mixed-signal SerDes performance like many ASIC and FPGA LVDS cells."
"JTAG and at-speed BIST are important test features which lower manufacturing and maintenance costs of highly integrated devices such as these. BGA (ball grid array) packaged devices necessitate novel built-in test solutions, and this benefits the entire supply chain," added Brian Stearns, marketing manager for National Semiconductor's System Test Access products.
The SCAN928028 integrates eight 10-bit SCAN921023 serializers on one chip and features IEEE 1149.1 JTAG test support as well as at-speed BIST which allows designers and manufacturing engineers to quickly test the high speed serial links. The SCAN926260 integrates six 10-bit SCAN921224 deserializers on one chip and also includes JTAG and at-speed BIST. Large communications infrastructure systems typically require a mix of discrete and integrated SerDes, making eight serializers and six deserializers the optimal integration for many applications. The SCAN928028 and SCAN926260 are part of a broad portfolio of Bus LVDS and LVDS products from National Semiconductor. Available today, the SCAN928028 and SCAN926260 are each housed in a 15 x 15 mm, 196-lead ball grid array (BGA) package. Each of the two devices is priced at $24.00 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
