If you think Bluetooth is dead in the water, check out this news. Bluetooth vendor Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) is teaming up with Cypress Semiconductor to offer Bluetooth connectivity for off-the-shelf Universal Serial Bus (USB) peripherals. In fact, CSR is demonstrating a USB Bluetooth printer dongle design that carries a total bill of materials of under $15. It brings together CSR's BlueCore Bluetooth chipset and Cypress's USB On-The-Go (OTG) semiconductors.
The printer dongle example design can be seen at www.csr.com/products/examples.htm. It permits standard USB-enabled printers to receive and print Bluetooth data from laptops---and, eventually, PDAs, digital cameras, and cellphones---without turning on the printer's host PC. In time, the design will be applied to other USB peripherals, Web cams, and audio systems.
Will it fly? Only time will tell. For more information.---AMM (21 Oct. 2003)
