Based on the PowerPC 603e core, MPC5200 from Motorola Inc.'s Semiconductor Products Sector promises low power, high performance, and a broad range of I/O. The 32-bit MPC5200 embedded processor is targeted at applications such as gateways, industrial controllers, telematics, global positioning systems, instrumentation, and data image processing devices.
The 400 MHz MPC5200 includes a floating-point unit that promises 760 MIPS while consuming fewer than 850 milliwatts of power. The combination of its I/O and processing power are designed to help eliminate the need for separate controllers. For some tasks, it can eliminate the need for a DSP.
Manufactured in a 0.13-micron process and housed in a 272-pin package, the processor also offers support for automotive and general networking functions, including Ethernet, USB 1.1 Host, CAN 2.0, J1850 BDLC-D, PCI, ATA, I2S (Inter-IC Sound), I2C, and SPI.
An integrated SDRAM interface supports 133 MHz Double Data Rate (266 MHz effective) memories. The chip's DMA controller offloads most data transfer operations from the main processor core. The 400 MHz MPC5200 from minus 40 to plus 85 degrees Celsius.
Motorola supports the new device with a choice of development platforms. The Lite5200 Evaluation Board Kit, for customers wanting to develop their own hardware solutions, includes evaluation-version Board Support Packages for Green Hills Software's INTEGRITY and QNX's Neutrino real-time operating systems. A 30-day license of Metrowerks CodeWarrior integrated development environment and two emulation probes are included.
The Total5200 Development Platform offers I/O expansion, an integrated LCD with touch screen and a Bluetooth wireless technology audio subsystem. Also available on the Total 5200 Development Platform are the QNX Neutrino RTOS and IBM WebSphere support for the Java programming language, as well as Clarity CVC, Fonix Embedded Speech, IBM Embedded ViaVoice and Wavemakers ClearStream speech recognition solutions.
Samples are available now for the MPC5200 400 MHz extended temperature device. Production quantities are planned for late 2003 with a suggested retail price of $22.50 in 10,000-piece quantities. The Lite5200 EVB Kit and Total5200 Development Platform are available today. Suggested resale prices start at $995 and $5,000, respectively.
