SAN MATEO, Calif. The consolidation of the electronic design automation industry advanced on two front Wednesday (April 24), when Cadence Design Systems Inc. said it will acquire verification specialist Simplex Solutions Inc. for $300 million, or $18 per share of Simplex stock. Earlier, Mentor Graphics Corp. announced plans to purchase Innoveda Inc.
The acquisition is expected to be completed in the third quarter.
The deal plugs a hole in Cadence's tools portfolio, bringing it IC extraction and analysis tools. As design rules creep below 130 nanometers, designers lean increasingly on such tools to find signal-integrity problems. The acquisition also gives Cadence a competitive tool in its battle against Synopsys Inc., which will acquire extraction and analysis tools in an another industry-consolidating move, its pending merger with Avanti Corp.
"With Cadence's strong global channel and technology investment in 0.13-micron and below, together we are able to deliver the best immediate and long-term solutions for our customers' most daunting technology challenges," said Penny Herscher, Simplex's chief executive officer.
Simplex is also a driving force behind the X Initiative, a multi-company effort to transform traditional "Manhattan-style" 90° routing architectures to 45° angles to speed diagonal, cross-chip interconnect.
