Orem, UT--May 21, 1996--A software-only version ofStandbyServer for NetWare has been announced by Vinca Corp. (Orem, UT). Ituses standard network interface cards and cabling to copy datainto a standby machine over a dedicated link or through anexisting network. The standby machine can be in the same room,on another floor, in another building, or even another city fordisaster recovery.
The new software package has all the functions of its predecessor,StandbyServer 32, allowing a warm, online standby machine to beconnected to the main server. If the primary server failsbecause of software or hardware problems, the standby machinetakes over automatically with a complete, real-time copy of thedata.
Vinca recommends a dedicated link between the two machines toavoid increased network traffic and maintain optimum performance. However, the data can be transmitted over existing networktopologies to avoid additional hardware purchases. Thesoftware is completely bridgeable and routeable, so that anyserver on the network can be the standby machine. Customers maychoose industry-standard communication links that use standardIPX protocols.
