Mountain View, CA--May 6, 1996--A CMOS DC/DC voltageconverter, the TCM680, has been announced by TelComSemiconductor Inc. (Mountain View, CA). It is a dual capacitive charge pump converter that develops +/-10 volts from a single +5V power supply, or +/-6V from a +3V lithium cell. It requires fourinexpensive electrolytic capacitors (values of 1uF to 100uF) andno inductors. It requires less than half the supply current ofits nearest competitor and supports a maximum load current of10mA per output.
Housed in an 8-pin SOIC or an 8-pin PDIP, the TCM680 is usefulwherever both positive and negative analog supply voltages arerequired, but only a single low voltage supply is available. High differential output voltage makes the device especiallyuseful for biasing liquid-crystal displays, allowing the use ofless expensive displays that operate at higher voltages. Otherapplications include analog bias supplies in portable systemssuch as cellular phones, portable instrumentation, and portablecomputing equipment.
