Rome, Italy--September 25, 1996--Cadence Design Systems Inc. (San Jose, CA) announced the expansion of its advanced research operations into Europe. Based in Rome, Cadence European Labs will consist of a network of research centers throughout Europe focusing on sophisticated design applications critical to the European electronics industry. Initial research projects will examine embedded system design, advanced radio frequency design, and inductive learning techniques.
Cadence also announced that board member and University of California, Berkeley professor Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli will serve as site manager for the Rome facility and general manager of Cadence European Labs.
Instrumental in launching the company's original advanced research operations in Berkeley, California, Sangiovanni-Vincentelli will apply the business model of supporting advanced research independent of the company's core research and development activities.
In addition to the Rome site, the initial research centers will be located at the Politecnico of Turin, Italy, and at INESC, Lisbon, Portugal. Expansion to other locations within Europe, using leading universities as base sites, is planned for 1997. The Rome center will also serve as the liaison point for a collaborative effort announced between Cadence, Magneti Marelli, SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics, and the National Research Council of the Italian government.
Cadence will support teams of developers in Rome, Turin, and Lisbon, who will work with university researchers and Cadence customers in examining real-world design challenges and developing practical design automation solutions. A major focus of the research will be to target embedded system design, an area critical to key European electronics industries such as telecommunications and automotive electronics. The European operations will be connected to Cadence Berkeley Labs through high-bandwidth networking connections, as well as through frequent exchange of researchers.
