San Jose, CA--September 23, 1996--VLSI Technology Inc. (San Jose, CA) announced the VISTA System-Level Silicon solution.
VISTA is VLSI's comprehensive suite of digital video devices, application program interface (API) software and reference platforms, providing the full range of components necessary to build a complete digital set-top box. With VLSI's advanced CMOS process technology and FSB (functional system block) design methodology, the VISTA architecture will enable the implementation of the industry's single-chip set-top box.
The VISTA architecture is comprised of network interface (VISTA NI) devices performing demodulation and forward error correction; system controller (VISTA SC) devices featuring the advanced RISC machine (ARM) processor and MPEG 2 demultiplexing and decryption; and audio/video (VISTA AV) devices providing MPEG 2 audio/video decompression and BTSC/PAL video encoding. The VISTA API provides a software "wrapper" that eases and accelerates set-top software development efforts for the manufacturer, while the VISTA ENVISION and PROFILE reference platforms assist the set-top designer in evaluation and design. VLSI, with its VISTA architecture, will provide the market with digital video solutions through continuing System-Level Silicon integration and feature enhancement.
The VISTA architecture will address new and emerging standards and requirements using its FSB, methodology, high-density 0.35-m CMOS process technologies, and ASICs and standard product ICs. VLSI devices are designed into set-tops for DIRECTV in the U.S. and France's Canal+ digital satellite service, and have a presence in set-tops for Japan's PerfecTV satellite program.
The VISTA NI is a family of interchangeable devices compliant with worldwide standards such as DVB and DSS that seamlessly interfaces with VISTA SC. To address the direct broadcast satellite (DBS) market, VISTA NI features the VES1777, a dual-mode single-chip DSS/DVB satellite receiver integrating QPSK demodulation and forward error correction functionality. This device is pin-compatible with the VES1789 and VES1790, DVB-only single-chip satellite receivers. The VES1790 has been optimized for high-speed 90+ MHz operation.
To address the digital cable and cable modem markets, VISTA NI integrating QAM 16~256 demodulation and forward error correction functionality. All VISTA NI devices output fully demodulated and error corrected MPEG 2 transport streams.
The VES0700 set-top peripheral controller integrates a number of peripheral functions, including UARTs, a parallel port, ISO 7816 Smart Card controller, timers, counters, and an IR blaster.
The VES2020X and VES2030 integrate a programmable PID parsing engine, an MPEG 2 transport demultiplexer, and a clock recovery circuit. The VES2030 adds direct teletext output, CRC engine, and a DVB decryption engine.
VISTA AV includes the VES6000 MPEG 2 Audio/Video Decoder and VES7000 Video Encoder devices, providing full MPEG 2 video decompression; MPEG 1 Musicam audio decompression; on-screen display (OSD) support; and full video signal encoding compliant to both the NTSC and PAL television standards.
The VISTA API provides the set-top designer with a complete set of software routines, device drivers, and firmware; simplifying and accelerating set-top software and application program design. The VISTA API includes device drivers for all products in the VISTA solution, buffering the set-top designer from having to code software down to the register level.
